Our paid Art Docent Program, paid Workforce Development and Art Apprenticeship Programs for youth have been happening for 6 years now. Over 80 youth have benefited from those programs. They started a funds raising event called Redeton in 2020 to support the health sector, donated in equal parts to Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social and Hospital General, both in Agua Prieta. This money was used to buy materials and equipment required during that time of pandemic. Collaborating with Raíces de Amor, business and community members, they donated trees, bushes, hoses and a Virgen de Guadalupe image to decorate Hospital General green areas. In January 2021, again, funds were collected and donated to buy more oxygen tanks for the community. Amigos sin Corona has helped during hard times due to natural disasters, donating essential items and construction materials, small houses were built for people who were affected. At this moment, Amigos sin Corona's work is focused on raising funds to buy an ambulance to be used by the Agua Prieta people. We embody their declaration of the humanity (and dignity) of Black, poor, and working-class people and continue their legacy of advancing human understanding through storytelling, engagement, and practice. Clayborn began its life in 1892 as Second Presbyterian Church. In 1949 the church was sold to an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation, who changed the property’s name to Clayborn Temple. In 1968, after developing a reputation of supporting civil rights work, civil rights and labor activists chose Clayborn Temple as the organizing headquarters for the Sanitation Workers’ Strike, Martin Luther King’s last campaign. Focused on achieving dignity and economic wellbeing for the workers, the campaign’s iconic “I AM A MAN” signs were made daily in the Temple’s basement and have since become a universal symbol for human rights and human dignity. Clayborn Temple closed in 1999 and fell into disrepair, but it has since reopened. Officially named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, local and national leaders, community members, and preservationists alike are all committed to keeping Clayborn Temple alive, preserving its legacy and bringing its vision for the future to fruition. Over the next two years, through thousands of one-on-one conversations, the group became Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope, or MICAH—the name of a prophet who called God’s people to "Do justice." Today, MICAH is a coalition of 80+ faith, labor, and community-based organizations that aim to provide a powerful voice for justice in Memphis and Shelby County. MICAH’s three key issue areas are Economic Equity, Education Equity, and Race & Class Equity in the Justice System. Our 168 members include women who clean houses, care for children, and provide for the sick and elderly in their homes. Our organization's work began at the bus, while we were on our way to our jobs and we were hearing the painful stories of the abuses that domestic workers faced every day. George Andrew Gibson grew up in Elaine and wanted to give back with a community center in Elaine. He was introduced to Patricia Kienzle from Fayetteville, who had been coming to do activities with children for a few years. A portable two room school building was donated to the organization. Divine Deliverance Christian Ministries in Elaine and Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fayettevile raised over $6,000 to have it moved from Helena to Elaine. Several groups worked on the building to make it usable. The building is located in the middle of low income housing. Students began watching for a vehicle to park in the grass. An undefined relay system filled the building. In 2013, it was discovered that the students enjoyed painting birdhouses. The idea arose to brighten the town with birdhouses. A building was purchased downtown that could be the Birdhouse Headquarters and a place for visitors to stay. A resident had a vacant lot next door he wanted to sell. We received a grant to make it into a park honoring Scipio Jones. The theme is: Recognizing the Past, With Hope for the Future, 1919-2019 and Beyond. Lee Street Community Center has provided both educational and recreational activities on Lee Street and on Main Street. Efforts continue to teach the past, while giving students hope for the future. We embody their declaration of the humanity (and dignity) of Black, poor, and working-class people and continue their legacy of advancing human understanding through storytelling, engagement, and practice. Clayborn began its life in 1892 as Second Presbyterian Church. In 1949 the church was sold to an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) congregation, who changed the property’s name to Clayborn Temple. In 1968, after developing a reputation of supporting civil rights work, civil rights and labor activists chose Clayborn Temple as the organizing headquarters for the Sanitation Workers’ Strike, Martin Luther King’s last campaign. Focused on achieving dignity and economic wellbeing for the workers, the campaign’s iconic “I AM A MAN” signs were made daily in the Temple’s basement and have since become a universal symbol for human rights and human dignity. Clayborn Temple closed in 1999 and fell into disrepair, but it has since reopened. Officially named a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, local and national leaders, community members, and preservationists alike are all committed to keeping Clayborn Temple alive, preserving its legacy and bringing its vision for the future to fruition. From the outset of our mental health focus, SBCC partnered with agencies like 1736 House to jointly provide services and support to victims of Domestic Violence. Initially, Strength Based Community Change (SBCC) was serving a population of adults. Services were provided on a sliding scale determined by income and family compensation. However, no one was declined services if they could not afford the fee. In 1985 SBCC moved to a larger space and expanded our mission. Since 1985 SBCC has worked with local community residents to empower individuals, strengthen families and transform communities. SBCC has grown and evolved over the years to address broader challenges faced by individuals, families and communities in Los Angeles County.
