JOE AIDONIDIS

WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS, 2020 - 2021


Joe Aidonidis is a filmmaker focusing on the extraordinary challenges of ordinary people by capturing their unique experiences. Using documentary film, he responds to the challenges faced by his local community; with every project, Aidonidis embeds himself into the community for weeks or months at a time. A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, he runs the Berkshire-based video production company GreatSkyMedia.

Joe worked in partnership with Images Cinema, GAAMHA, Northern Berkshire Community Coalition, and the wider Western Massachusetts community on a new film project documenting addiction and isolation in a time of quarantine and social distancing.

In 2022 Joe completed and released his documentary “Children of Apathy”'; the film takes an honest look at the opiate crisis in the Northern Berkshires, aiming to understand the stresses on systems and people with a specific focus on families, first responders, and health care providers. 

The work was nominated for a New England Emmy in 2023.

Images Cinema, a non-profit community movie theater, presents a wide range of independent, foreign and classic films which impact filmmaking and our culture. Images Cinema is dedicated to the exploration of film as an art form, a source of entertainment and an educational tool. One of the few remaining single-screen, independent theaters still in operation, Images Cinema is an historic part of the Northern Berkshires.

Gardner Athol Area Mental Health Association is an organization dedicated to providing a wide range of services including substance use disorder and recovery support and a residential substance abuse program. Northern Berkshire Community Coalition empowers, connects, convenes and supports communities in the Northern Berkshire region. nbCC offers programming, support and education around substance abuse prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.
