ARTIST

Reginald B. McKinley II (b. 1986, Houston, Texas) is a Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary artist, social commentator, and equity consultant. His research-based projects use domestic objects and photos to illuminate life as explored through the transitioning of times, temperaments, tenets, and technology. He received his MA from University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, MBA fellowship from UCLA Anderson, and BA’s, with honors, from Morehouse College. His work has led to being on CNN, NPR, BBC, NBC, ABC and guest lecturing across the US and in Brazil. Reginald’s core beliefs are that acknowledgement and exposure precedes visibility. His work documenting daily life helps question the attitudes and unwritten rules that dictate who has opportunities to be seen. Reginald’s work can be viewed on all social media platforms at @heyreginald and at www.reginaldmckinley.com

SOCIAL IMPACT INITIATIVE

Art In Residence’s mission is to explore and realize the potential of public art in the Antelope Valley through active practice, outreach, and education. Supporting and bringing opportunities for artists in Antelope Valley, CA is at the heart of AIR’s mission. AIR’s aim is to develop an open-air exhibition space for rotating exhibitions, an Artist In Residence program, public workshops, and portfolio development opportunities for local and international artists. AIR’s open-air alternative exhibition space is a gallery with no walls. The exhibition space, bordering the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, is a space to discover and express what it means to be “in residence,” using the high desert as a backdrop to consider the social, political, historical and phenomenological aspects of the surroundings. In addition to exhibition space, AIR seeks to add value to the Antelope Valley community by partnering with local organizations in creative placemaking opportunities, engaging with the community in both civic and creative endeavors. Supplementing outreach and exhibitions, AIR offers public workshops and portfolio development opportunities to help artists sustain their creative work over time as well as prepare aspiring artists for further formal arts education. Finally, Art In Residence seeks to expand upon and support the local high school arts-based curriculum by providing opportunities outside the classroom for students to develop creative work.

Reginald B. McKinley, II is currently conducting research on economic inequity in the Antelope Valley region, taking inspiration from W. E. B. Du Bois's Data Portraits. With this research and data collection, he is working towards the development of a longer term Augmented Reality project.

In addition, in partnership with the City of Lancaster, he will be connecting with the Public Works' Team of Illegal Dump Eliminators (TIDE) Crew starting this June. The TIDE Crew works to clean up debris from illegal dumping and graffiti; Reginald will be embedded with the TIDE Crew, exploring creative ways to share the stories of communities in Lancaster.
